2018 Creative Output

The year is nearing its end, and looking back I am quite happy with some of the photography, videography and writing I accomplished.

Photography

I still greatly enjoy shooting underwater, especially macro. I also got some good shots of the amaaaazing sunsets seen on Siquijor island, and of cute little kids. A best-of-2019 selection is on display in this album on Flickr:

Videography

I am still working on my videography skills; there is more to video than to photography, it’s not just about aesthetic images, even a brief video should tell a good story. I think I achieved this with this video about the efforts of the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute in breeding the endangered giant clams:

This video captures what was probably the most nerve-wrecking moment I had underwater this year, when a Titan triggerfish decided that I was too close to his/her nest … the fish did not relent and attacked me several times:

Writing

My book on extreme brain states, “Gehirn Extrem”, was published with Felicitas Hübner Verlag in December! I am excited, and I hope it will find a wide readership. It was really fun to write, and I think the chapters represent original syntheses of difficult topics in neuroscience, written in a way so that interested laypeople can understand them without any issues. Check it out:

I also wrote what I think is a fairly complete review over the state of understanding of the biology of ghost pipefishes. It’s available in Underwater Photo Magazine, volume 101.

My review of the shrimp-goby symbiosis (in German) got published in Biologie in unserer Zeit:

Multimedia

I am quite happy about the Shrimp Goby Page, which features a review about this fascinating symbiosis between a shrimp and a fish and videos, photos, and even cartoons about the two partners.
