Spectacular Underwater Footage from the Web
I spent a quite a bit of time surveying them social media for interesting underwater footage and stills last week, and I found quite some gems! Number one: I very occasionally see the tropical blue-ringed octopi in the Philippines, and saw the southern hemisphere species more often in Australia. But I’ve never seen these very venomous creatures mate. What a spectacle!
First time seeing this caught on camera—two Southern Blue-Ringed Octopuses mating. Despite the rough water and low visibility, @sammyglenn_dives captured something rare: the male climbing onto the female’s mantle to start mating. Wild moment to witness. pic.twitter.com/xGY2JPrmvq

Number two: What a cool shot of a lionfish. I’ll have to try that angle, too:

Finally: Amazing! This eeems to be the first time this species was filmed alive in its natural habitat.
NEW: 100 years after it was first identified (from bits in a whale’s stomach), scientists have finally caught sight – and recorded footage – of the ultra-elusive colossal squid alive in its deep-sea habitat. It looks like a ghostly alien! 👻
