Large Pelagic Filter Feeder Evolution Documentary
I am very excited to present this collaboration with paleoartist extraordinaire Alice Turner, about the large pelagic filter feeders of the ocean, and their evolution. Today whales, manta rays, whale-, basking- and megamouth sharks are large animals swimming in the ocean, filter feeding plankton. But in the history of life on Planet Earth, many other species have filled this niche, including highly unusual arthropods of a now-extinct lineage, the radiodonts.
We would LOVE to make a full-length documentary about the topic. Since neither Alice nor I are independently wealthy, we need a production/broadcasting company to finance the project. This is a fascinating story which will find an audience. Get in touch with us!
The review paper our documentary is based on: Stiefel, K. M. (2021). Evolutionary trends in large pelagic filter-feeders. Historical Biology, 33(9), 1477-1488.
