Three Insightful Fish Behavior Videos
I am in the lucky situation that I live on an island with amazing scuba diving off its coasts, and interesting freshwater biotopes on its mountain slopes. I filmed fish in both,
Freshwater Gobies
This video shows two species of freshwater gobies; one male neon goby displays a nuptial dance, in footage shot by my friend Likko; You can also see a close up of the same fish, and a female Red Belted Goby (Sicyopus zosterophorus) grazing on algae. Not easy to get such footage in the natural environment of these fishes, small, sometimes fast-flowing freshwater creeks.
And, yes, my goby book is still on the market!
Hunting Groupers
This video is from Apo Island, the famous diving destination about 30 minutes by boat away from Negros Island. I was lucky enough to have my GoPro rolling when this grouper caught a soldier fish, and then another grouper came to inspect the hunting success:
Pipefish
The tiny, white, elongated creatures in this mushroom corals are actually fish – the mushroom coral pipefish, Siokunichthys nigrolineatus. These are vertebrates, animals with a backbone, like humans and cows. The same basic body layout. Amazing. Rather rarely seen, even in muck diving heaven Dauin, I had not seen these in at least a year.
