Pacificklaus News April 2025
The first part of this year was quite productive in terms of my creative endeavors. I got to travel quite a bit, write the travel writing to go with the trips, and shoot a bit of drone footage. Drone filming is so much fun! An island I always enjoyed visiting is Siquijor, just across from Negros (we can see it from our roof terrace). After our latest trip to the wonderful island, I put together a travel info page about Siquijor:
Philippines Travel Map
I generally enjoy travel writing, I think travel is very uplifting for the mind, something I notice even on short trips on the same island. It breaks everyday routine thought patterns so reliably. In the decade plus I’ve traveled the Philippines, I have come up with longread blog posts sharing thoughts about places, vlogs & travel tips. I now put all of these together in a zoom & clickable map. Enjoy!
Big Mantis Shrimp
OF COURSE I am continuing to shoot underwater footage. This very, very big mantis shrimp racing around is probably the best footage I got in the last months. This happened on a night dive. Not to be missed:
Neanderclone
And … there was a recent flare up of discussions of the concept of “de-extinction”. Supposedly, a US startup re-created an extinct wolf species. Just, they didn’t. They made minor gene edits in a modern wolf. It’s not a big step to go from the startup’s weak argument to the claim that we de-extincted a Neanderthal. Let the CEO of “Neanderclone” explain:
Parasite
Finally: a more unusual fish photograph. The fish in question was dead, meant to be my sweetheart’s dinner. Turns out, it had a massive parasite under its gill:
