Nudibranchs and other Sea Slugs

My main scientific interests in marine biology are small fishes, and my main interest in underwater photography are small fishes as well. At the same time, I will not swim by a beautiful sea slug and not photograph it should I be with my camera during a dive.

Hence I ended up, over the years, with a significant amount of nice-ish footage of nudibranchs and other sea slugs, prominently the Pleurobranchs. And I recently started reading up on mollusk evolution, which is a fascinating topic, especially the early evolution of all the major groups in the long-past Cambrian.

As a result of these efforts, please see a new video, my guide to sea slugs, answering a few questions: what is the difference between a sea slug and a nudibranch, what do they feed on, how do they defend themselves, and how are they related to other mollusks? With lots of underwater footage from the Philippines!

Stills Too

Below is an album on Flickr with shots of nudibranchs and sea slugs from two decades of underwater photography. All of of the places where I lived since 2002, San Diego, Okinawa, Sydney and Dumaguete in the Philippines, have amazing sea slug faunae. Most of the time since 2002 I had a fairly nice or even superb macro underwater setup, and the nudi pix piled up.

I hope you enjoyed these beautiful small marine animals,
