Woman Hospitalized due to Social Media Outrage Withdrawal
In a first in medical history, a 29 year old woman was admitted to an emergency ward in San Diego, CA, USA, due to what seems to be a case of social media outrage withdrawal.
No one in her wider circle of online “friends” had recently shared or commented on posts detailing or even hinting at the abuse of animals or the slighting and insulting of real or imagined identity groups. Not even parodies discussing these issues had appeared on her Facebook, Instagram or Twitter feeds in about 10 days. What was especially puzzling was the absence of any discussion of a raunchy joke the current US president had made a decade ago, typically a very reliable source of online outrage. What caused this unforeseeable temporary lack of online outrage is not clear and is presently hotly discussed by social media experts.
The unnamed young woman affected by what doctors in the San Diego Trinity Bomb hospital tentatively termed “Social Media Outrage Withdrawal Syndrome” (SMOWS) was otherwise in good health. Her symptoms include the shakes, jiggly legs, and heavy, uncontrollable salivation. She is in serious, but stable condition.
Dr. Janesh Gosh of the department of psychosocial medicine at the San Diego Trinity Bomb hospital explained that the massive amount of outrage which had accumulated in 10 days had to find an alternative vent. “Hence the jiggly legs” Dr. Gosh explained.
Experts now recommend sharing outrageous online content at least once a day to prevent further cases of SMOWS.
